What is a good CTR for Facebook ads?

Between 0.8% and 1.8% is normal for Facebook feed ads, and above 2% is strong. But CTR on its own is a poor scoreboard — a high rate with no enquiries usually means the ad is promising something the landing page doesn't deliver.

Normal ranges

Rough expectations rather than guarantees. Placement and format move these substantially.

WhereTypical CTR
Facebook feed0.8–1.8%
Instagram feed0.5–1.2%
Stories / Reels0.4–1.0%
Retargeting audiences2–5%
Google Search (for comparison)3–5%

Google Search sits far higher because the person typed a query asking for exactly what you sell. Comparing a Meta CTR to a Google CTR is comparing two different activities.

Why CTR is worth watching anyway

It is one of very few metrics that improves cost and volume at the same time. Meta's auction delivers engaging ads more cheaply, so a better click-through rate lowers what you pay per result rather than just flattering the report.

It is also the earliest reliable signal of creative decay. Click-through rate declines before cost per lead rises, which makes it the number to watch if you want to act before results suffer.

When a high CTR is bad news

A high click-through rate with few conversions is a specific diagnosis, not an ambiguity. It means the ad is attracting clicks it should not be.

Usually the ad has over-promised, or led with curiosity rather than intent — a headline that makes people click to find out what it means will produce an excellent CTR and no customers. Sometimes the landing page simply does not continue the sentence the ad started.

Judge the pair together. A 3% click-through rate feeding a 1% landing page conversion is worse business than a 1% click-through rate feeding a 15% one, and only one of those looks impressive in a report.

How to improve it

Lead with the specific, not the general

'Same-day boiler repair in Leeds' beats 'quality heating services'. Specificity earns the click because it tells the reader whether the ad is for them.

Write for the first two lines

Most of the ad is truncated on a phone. If the argument has not landed by the second line, the rest was never read.

Match the creative to the audience, not to your taste

A low CTR usually means the ad and the audience disagree rather than that the ad is badly made.

Test one variable at a time

Changing the image and the copy together tells you the combination performed differently, and nothing about which change caused it.

Questions

Is a 1% CTR good on Facebook?[+]

It is normal for feed placements. Whether it is good depends on what happens next — a 1% rate feeding a well-converting landing page is a healthy campaign.

Why is my Instagram CTR lower than Facebook?[+]

Instagram browsing is more visual and less link-driven, and Stories and Reels are consumed at speed. Lower rates there are expected rather than a problem.

Does CTR affect my ad costs?[+]

Yes. Meta's auction rewards ads people engage with by delivering them more cheaply, so improving CTR usually lowers cost per result as well as increasing traffic.

What's a good CTR for retargeting?[+]

Considerably higher — 2–5% is common, because the audience already knows you. Comparing retargeting rates to cold prospecting rates will make your prospecting look broken when it is not.
