What is Smart Bidding?

Smart Bidding is Google's automated bidding, setting a different bid for every individual auction based on signals about the searcher.

It uses signals a human can't act on in real time — device, location, time of day, browser, audience membership — and adjusts each bid accordingly. When it has data, it genuinely outperforms manual bidding.

The failure mode is starting it too early or constraining it too hard. Setting an aggressive target CPA or ROAS on a campaign with little history pushes the system to bid only on the cheapest, safest traffic, which starves the campaign of the volume it needed to learn from.

The sensible sequence is to start without a target, let it gather conversions for two to four weeks, and only then introduce one.
